House at Indian Creek

Sent by my grandmother to her mother-in-law, this picture postcard is postmarked exactly one month after my grandmother gave birth to my mother in this house. Given evidence and likelihoods, allow me to imagine that the photo was taken on the very day of that birth. Mom ever remembered the Sunday a few years later when, standing helplessly among family and neighbors, she looked up at her new red shoes on the sill of the window in the gable while the house burned to the ground. Countless days make a Mothers' Day.
