El Rosario

Photo from water tower:

El Rosario, near port Champerico on the Pacific Coast of Guatemala, about 1968. During our two Peace Corps years there we lived for a while in the foreground "clinic" and two of the three houses (one barely visible) in the background.

The tiny roof on the left is a "tienda" barely big enough for the school teacher who ran it when not in the school, and for the kerosene operated refrigerator for pop, beer and such where we rented part of a shelf for 5 or 6 meals worth of meat that we bought every 7 or so days at the market in Retalhuleu, the city about 30km distant.

The water tower, and its water, were a luxury provided in this government outpost; the system worked for all but the last six weeks of our time there.
